At CrowdEmotion we quantify emotions. This is a tricky task to say the least.

In this series of posts we look at the main emotions we look for and measure, how we capture them, and what the results mean to you.

Emotions are rarely felt as black and white. They are complicated and can change rapidly. So how do we know what to look for?

The Ekman Emotions.

Through an extensive study of global subjects, psychologist Paul Ekman found certain emotional expressions to be universal. These emotions are:

They form the basis of our universal, human, non-verbal language. Whether you’re from Swaziland or Swindon, we all express these emotions in the same way. Our tools allow us to read this universal language and package it in a way anyone can understand and use.

This is a fascinating prospect: To push back the veil of subjective spoken language (and often inaccurate conscious rationalisations) and glimpse the primal forces that influence us all. By blending this emotional data with other meta-data, like sales, we can begin to make powerful connections between what drives us and how we interact with the world.

Imagine a way to see how people feel, to intervene when someone is feeling sad, to understand someone with communication difficulties, to create the perfect movie, to have our digital tools understand us and react to our needs. Imagine if we could teach machines how to feel. This is what we do at CrowdEmotion.

Stay tuned for more posts about the Ekman Emotions and what they mean to you.
