Making Us Happy [January]

Mr Robot / The Marvelous Mrs Maisel / The Shape of Water / Justin Timberlake’s Filthy / The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild

Books, movies, TV Shows, apps, music, sports and more! Read about what other people are enjoying and discover new things.

I’m a media consumer. I enjoy watching movies and series, listening to podcasts, playing games, trying out apps, reading books, all of that.

There’s one NPR podcast in particular that I enjoy, Pop Culture Happy Hour. PCHH is basically a panel of people who talk about a specific movie or show. One of the segments they have every week is ‘What’s making us happy’ where they share 1 thing/show/meme/whatever that made them happy that week. Through that segment I’ve discovered a lot of shows and books that I wouldn’t have had discovered otherwise.

Obviously, this sparked the idea of asking what the people around me (digitally or geographically) are enjoying. I went to Facebook and posted the simple question shown here.

I got a good amount of answers and figured out it would be great to share them with others.

Before I share some of the things that are making us happy this month, I’ll selfishly share a bit about mine:

[Movie] Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water”: GDT is a genius. This movie just got him his first Golden Globe for Best Director and Critic’s Choice Awards for Direction and Best Movie. The Shape of Water is something gorgeous to just look at. It’s kind of weird for me to talk about the story without feeling silly, because enjoying the love story of a mute cleaning lady and an amphibian being isn’t that easy to explain, but it is a solid fable. Yes, the story has a ton of holes you could poke… but what would you? Just let go and enjoy the visually stunning movie.

[TV Show] Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee: So I have a confession to make: I’m not a Seinfeld fan. I mean, I did watch it and I enjoy it, but I don’t enjoy it as others do. Sometimes it even felt annoying.

That’s why I wasn’t that interested in his latest show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”, but I decided to put it on the background as I cooked dinner one night this week and it totally surprised me. The premise is as straight forward as the title: Seinfeld picks a specific car, calls a comedian friend and goes and grabs coffee with them. The episodes include Mustangs, Cadillacs, Volvos, Porsches and other cool cars; as well as comedians such as Tina Fey, Fred Armisen, Trevor Noah, Aziz Anzari and Amy Schumer.

It’s such a Seinfeld type-show. It really is about nothing, but, damn isn’t it enjoyable.

[Music] Filthy - Justin Timberlake: When I heard it the first one I didn’t understand what that song has to do with the title of his upcoming album “Man of the Woods” (and I still don’t). When I saw the video of JT channeling some futuristic Steve Jobs in Malaysia in 2020something, I got a little bit annoyed, but I must admit the song grew on me after the third time listening it. Cool beats, nonsense lyrics, weird intro. Check the video out further down in this post.

[Apps] Daily Art: This app shows you one different piece of art and a short story about it every day. Pretty cool if you’re into art at any level.

[Sports] NFL / Australian Open: Ok, so my team just got eliminated yesterday afternoon, so I’m going to be a little less invested than I was, but we still have some cool games coming up. Keep the chips and beers Sundays going on until the big 02/04.

And making me happy on the other side of the world, the Australian Open has officially started! Some of the big stars won’t be playing due to injuries, but the draws are still solid. Let the long nights begin!

[Video games] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: I hadn’t played video games in a while, but yesterday after the failed Steelers game, when it seemed the Minnesota Vikings game was going to be kinda boring (boy, were we wrong), we got the Nintendo Switch out and played some rounds of Mario Kart 8. Simple but so entertaining. Hitting your friends with a red shell right before they cross the finish line and taking the first place from them… those are the little things that matter, right?

So here’s some more things that made me and more people happy this week. Thanks to everybody who shared theirs!

Hopefully you’ll discover something this week. If you do, share it here or using the hashtag #MakingUsHappy.
