Last month we announced reaching a significant milestone of enabling fully volumetric 3D video of real people. Today, as we head to CES 2016, we’re excited to announce the 8i Portal, a virtual reality player that enables you to experience volumetric content on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets.

So, if you thought watching Princess Leia as a hologram was pure Hollywood fantasy, we hope you check it out. You can now walk up to someone in VR who looks real and not computer generated, move around them, make eye contact, and feel true presence.

While Oculus Rift pre-orders start this week and commercial launch of the Vive is slated for the first half of 2016, we’re releasing some experiences early for those of you who already own a headset.

Simpy head on over to 8i.com/install to download the 8i Portal and choose from several volumetric VR experiences. We’ll be adding more content over the coming months, so keep an eye out for updates.

The launch of the 8i Portal for VR brings us one step closer to delivering on our mission to enable creators and consumers to connect with each other in the closest way to real life. We’d love to hear what you think, if you’ve got any feedback hit us up at hi@8i.com.
