Daniel, a musician and music teacher in Germany, was driving home after a concert listening to the radio when he first heard Malala’s story. He immediately knew this story would have a large impact on his life.

In particular, he was moved by the part of Malala’s speech to the UN where she described how, in Pakistan, girls may not learn, sing, laugh, or dance and how girls who go to school were being threatened and attacked.

“For me, this was very hard to understand, because my students are mainly girls of Malala’s age,” Daniel described. Hearing her speech upset him, but he found a way to channel that despair into inspiration and start “The Malala Project.”

He wanted to compose a song that captured the spirit of the brave girl’s story he had heard on the radio. One early morning as he sat his piano, tunes and melodies “popped” into his head and “together they became a beautiful song,” Daniel describes.

Daniel set out to begin the long and intense process of creating a song with the help of other musicians. He wrote the first violin set. The lyrics came next. They told the story of who “Malala is and what happened to her,” says Daniel.

Eventually, more and more musicians wanted to be a part of the project and they came into Daniel’s studio to contribute. So, with some effort and a lot of love, the song “Malala Day” was born.

The song, Daniel believes, belongs to Malala personally, because “without her story, it would have been a beautiful song.” It’s Malala’s story that gives the song its heart.

Daniel believe it’s important for men — not just women and girls — to stand up for girls education. “In most cases, it’s usually men who are guilty of violence and bullying. They have a worldwide monopoly of power, meaning they control every possibility to improve the equality of rights,” Daniel says.

He believes that men should stand beside women because “all humans are equal regardless of nationality or gender.”

One way for men to show their support is create messages of support like Daniel, who advises anyone who wants to show their support in a creative way to never lose site of the mission that drives them.

Daniel will donate all of the profits from the “Malala Day” song to the Malala Fund. Daniel’s fundraising goal is simple: “To collect money for the education and protection of girls,” he says. He hopes his song will become a “quiet anthem for equality” and garner more supporters for the Malala Fund.

“We started this project and now we are asking everyone to kindly help. There are many girls still in need of help,” Daniel says.
