Is time freedom as a busy, entrepreneurial mama too lofty a goal?

Is having time freedom too lofty a goal as a busy, entrepreneurial mama? Or is it just an accepted fact that mamas are perpetually busy and have no time for anything fun?

To be clear, time freedom is having the power to control what you do with your time, who you spend your time with and how you spend your time being.

I met a lady the other day on a forum geared towards entrepreneurs. I wanted to know, is time freedom the goal for an entrepreneur? If not, then what’s the point of working so hard, taking risks, investing tons of money and not having the time to do what we want?

The first person to respond was Kim, who apparently has time freedom and had the luxury of responding to my question in the middle of the day on a Wednesday. She said to me “I don’t have kids or a partner, but I have time freedom and I worked really hard to get it. It wasn’t easy, but I made sacrifices.”

When I asked her why she led her response with “I don’t have kids and a partner…”, she explained that for the past three decades, she felt she was always judged by moms for not understanding what it’s like to be truly busy. According to Kim, moms think single women just sip champagne all day and have no cares in the world.

I felt bad for Kim, for being judged in this way.

But I feel more sorry for all the moms out there who believe that being busy, overwhelmed and having no time to put up our feet and not being able to drink champagne is our demise for choosing (or not choosing) to have kids.

The truth is, everyone is busy.

Everyone from your high school kid with tons of homework and extracurriculars to your old retired grandma with tons of doctor’s appointments. Whether you’re employed or not, single or married, childless or have a full household, everyone in this day and age is busy.

Which begs the question, what are we busy doing? What is the point of a full schedule? What is the purpose of working with no goal in mind? If we work to pay off bills and don’t enjoy our short time on this planet, what are we teaching our children?

I’ve been a physiotherapist, yoga teacher and high performance coach for over a decade working with people with all sorts of backgrounds, education levels, ethnicities and age. The people who heal fastest, reach their goals and are overall happy and healthy are the ones who have time freedom.

Without time, how can we enjoy our kids?

Without time, how can we work on losing the belly fat?

Without time, how do we work on our hobbies — music, art, crafts, or side hustle?

Without time, how do we work on our marriage?

If we are always complaining about ‘not having enough time’, then shouldn’t having time freedom be our goal in life?

No, it’s not too lofty a goal.

It should be THE main goal in life.

Yes, financial freedom would be nice. It would be nice to have lots of money. But I know lots of people who have lots of money who never seem to have time to do what they love. They don’t have time to spend with their family and loved ones. And they are spending their time stressed and overwhelmed…

Mama Bosses, I’m calling you out. If you’re a mama, stop telling yourself and everyone else that you’re too busy. Stop telling everyone that you have no time to go out for a girls’ night. Stop telling everyone you don’t have time to exercise or take care of your health. Stop telling everyone that you have no time to work on starting (or scaling) your business.
