No Breast Milk Bags in Battery Park NYC

Wall Street is not worried about maternal wellbeing

Battery Park, Tribeca, FiDi — for anyone that’s been here knows this is stroller city.

Not only do countless moms live here, it’s also a prime neighborhood for some of the largest corporations in the world who are workplaces of tens of thousands of moms, and new moms returning to work are a huge number considering millennials make up a bulk of the workforce as of 2017, and are at the age when they are starting families.

I am in that group as a mom who returned to work in 2018 after having my first child.

As a new mom returning to work, and having to deal with competing priorities, commuting, a little baby at home, lack of sleep, and constantly rushing, it’s only natural that I’ve forgotten some supplies now and again.

I’ve run down to the pharmacies and was shocked to find nothing to help me out in a pinch.

I’ve hacked together different solutions found across the internet from other helpful moms — hand expressed into a clean mason jar, pumped into a freshly purchased baby bottle. Etc.

There are no breast milk storage bags in 1/2 mile radius of battery park at the big chain retail pharmacies

At the time of this writing, There are only 2 sets of bags across 6 pharmacies in a 1 mile radius

There are barely any pumping supplies such as manual pumps, replacement parts, or bottles.

Moms helping moms

A few months later when I’ve already become a veteran pumping mom, another mom hesitantly approached me as I was walking into the mothers room at my office — she said she’d forgotten her breast milk bags and asked if I had any to borrow.

This mom was at a total loss, and was about to go home all the way to upstate NY in the middle of the workday to relive her engorgement — which as any lactating mom knows is extremely uncomfortable, and stressful.

Not to mention the emotional discomfort of having to explain to a potentially male boss who might have zero comprehensions of women’s needs, let alone those of new moms.

This sounded all too familiar to me and I was so happy that I was in the position to help because since I learned my lesson, I stashed a bunch of bags in my locker.

Meanwhile back at the national chain pharmacies, formula is well stocked, and so are contraceptives.
