How Toxic Bosses Abuse Their Authority and the Negative Effects it Has on the Work Environment
Many ineffective managers believe that imposing their will on their subordinates is a sign of strength. In fact, it shows great insecurity and a lack of intellect. It is also very bad for business — disengaged employees and distrust stifle real growth. Unfortunately, I have worked for a few overbearing bosses in my day. Everything I write has been what I’ve experienced in the trenches of dysfunctional workplaces. My aim is to show how damaging toxic work environments are to individuals, to our communities, and to businesses. There’s a better way!
Here are some ways that malicious managers abuse their authority and the effect it has on the organizations they work for:
Denying vacation requests:
This is completely perplexing. PTO is a benefit (however, it should be a right) we get for the work we provide so we should be allowed to take it when we wish. But the gatekeepers that be, use this process to exert their power over those that report to them. Most companies have an edict that states something like this — A manager must take into consideration the well-being of their daily operational effectiveness before granting someone personal time off.
