While you’re looking for new job opportunities, you must have seen qualifications such as — payment system knowledge is a plus, EdTech experienced candidate is an amazing fit for this job, etc. It’s impossible to work in every industry, and it is possible to want to work in an industry you have never worked in. But when you read those qualifications you may feel like you’ll never have a chance to find your dream job because you don’t have enough or no experience.

Having thorough experience may help you find a new job in the same industry, but we all learn and improve every day — this is a must. And learning the same thing never helps us to grow but still how can we understand everything? Is it even possible?

What’s a Domain?
In computer science, a domain is a discrete subset of a network.
However, in professional life domain means an area of expertise or a specialized discipline.
What’s Domain Knowledge?
Domain knowledge is defined as the knowledge of a specific discipline or activity. Hence, we can say knowledge of a professional in a specific industry.
For example, I’m a Product Owner working on a B2B SaaS product, and our product is an All-in-One Platform for Maintenance Operations, my experience in Preventive Maintenance, Work Order Management, etc invaluable for those kinds of products. Because I’ve learned the processes, I know the users, possible mistakes, etc.
Why is Domain Knowledge Important?
Developing your current skill set and the skills you will gain in a way that you can apply in different sectors will benefit you a lot when you’re looking for a new job.
How to improve domain knowledge?
From what you’ve read so far, if you’re interested in improving your domain knowledge, you can do these things below, and getting used to a totally new industry will be easy-peasy;
- Planning and prioritizing are everything! I believe, the most important skill to learn is always planning and prioritizing.
- Research the most important skills that benefit you and be clear about those skills. Go find the exact skill set you need.
- Ask the right questions to the right people. If you’re a Product Manager working in an EdTech industry who wants to switch industry to FinTech as a Product Manager, go find people who work in FinTech as Product Managers. Be clear about what you want to learn, which will provide you to get exact answers you want to get. Don’t be shy about asking a lot of questions.
- Take classes. This one never and never will get old. Taking classes always will be one of the most efficient ways. And also it can provide you with strong networking. There’ll be lots of people in the same classes who have the same or similar goals, or concerns which can provide a strong networking
- Networking. Who can deny the importance and strength of networking?
