I’ve been a workaholic much of my career.

For instance, throughout much of my time consulting, I worked 12 hours a day at a bare minimum — in before the sun rose, out after it set. And my office didn’t have a window, which meant I could go entire workweeks without seeing the sun.

As you can imagine, entering the world of startups didn’t exactly help me improve that workaholic nature.

FWIW, putting in that much effort did help me rise through the ranks (or at least, that’s what I tell myself). But that kind of schedule isn’t exactly healthy for one’s soul.

Plus, there are better ways to get work done than simply grinding.

Do you manage a team? If so, you want people who deliver the most, not (necessarily) people who work the most.

That means you need to recruit and train not just hard workers, but smart workers.

And it all starts on the other end of the spectrum — with a focus on not working.
