We need summer. And by “we,” I mean us, working moms. We need it just like our kids need summer. Summer brings a time of outside, refreshing, heat, humidity where I live, and a season change all of its own. It’s a time when we can channel our inner kid and enjoy a few moments of that summer kid feeling.

Here’s what we working moms can do to embrace that summer feeling.

Know it will end.

At some point, my daughters won’t have a summer break. This will pass, and while right now it seems like this stage of life can be taxing, it will not be like this forever.

Know that it’s different.

This is different from the school year. Summertime comes with a different rhythm. There are different roles and responsibilities we take on. Before I had kids summer wasn’t any different, except that I tried to not plan my vacation during the summer to avoid the crowds. Now I’m embracing the summer vacation just like the rest of the world.

Know that our kids want us.

My daughters need my time. They need my engagement in their activities. And while I’m not a helicopter mom, I am there and will always be their biggest fan.

Know that we are enough.

Parenting is hard work. It is fun and rewarding, but it never stops. We working moms need something that is just ours at times. My morning walk with my dog is just mine. My daughters could walk with me, our schedules in the morning allow it right now, but I need time that I can have quiet and thinking.

For this summer, enjoy it. I know I am going to because soon, school will start. The days will grow shorter, and the temperature will cool. Little hands won’t be sticky with ice cream and swimsuits will be packed up. For this summer, I’m going to know that we are all enough.
