How to bring massive change, in a world, where no one is listening.

As I was walking towards the traffic lights this morning I noticed it’s red.

So, naturally, I slowed down and waited it out.

Two people, however, just jaywalked past it and crossed to the middle.

Fuck, I thought. Why are these people such hypocrites?!

First of all, it is completely pointless, since you can’t cross to the other end. You’re stuck in the middle.

Worst of all, these are the same people that constantly complain about how this country has no rules and no one is complying to them.

Well, motherfucker, if you, yourself, cannot even comply to the simple rule of not crossing the street when the sign is red and crossing when it’s green, then fuck… It is a goddamn binary decision, for God’s sake.

And mind you the jaywalker, was an elderly. Elderly people most of anyone should know better … or at least that’s what they say.

‘here we go’

Okay, so let’s get to the nugget of this story.

Ignore the little rant in the beginning, this story is actually very important for your success.

It’s simple.

When you want something to start happening differently in the world, but you think that you are ‘too small’ to change anything. Here is what you need to do (and not do):

  1. Do NOT become an always-complaining activist.

A large percentage of the time activists do not accomplish anything substantial and just rile up society. This is not because activism is shit, but because people think complaining brings change.

I do believe that if done correctly, activism does have a place in society.

But look. Activism is like a gold bracelet. It’s cool and flashy, and it attracts people’s attention, but in the end of the day, it has no function. It is just a statement.

2. Do NOT rely on politics.

Yep. Not in America, not in Europe, not anywhere. Politics does not work the way people expect.

Just imagine being a prime minister (for Europeans) or president (for Americans). You are this one person that every single person in the country expects something from. And it doesn’t stop there, you are bound to please some people more than others, cause if you don’t: ‘You’re out, baby’.

‘ruthless’

So, how do you expect that someone under so much pressure is going to bring (much) change?

3. The Change is YOU

Yes. It is not the big angry crowd that’s going to bring change. It is not the president or the prime minister. IT — IS — YOU.

Change takes many generations. It does not happen in the blink of an eye.

Just look at nature and evolution. It has taken our kind thousands of years to become what it is now.

But.

You know how change happens? It happens when you start with the small things, that are in your reach.

Change happens when you start with the small things, that are in your reach.

Let’s follow an example, to show how it works in the real world.

Say you want the laws in your country to work better.

Before you start pointing fingers and put the blame on the government or the law enforcement agencies. Look at yourself and what you’re doing.

‘always hold yourself accountable first’

Stop running orange/red lights. Stop throwing your smoked cigarette butt on the street.

All those small things, bring change.

Now, you might be thinking, but how is this going to stop corruption, murder and theft.

This is how it works. When you make these small changes, the young people around you will notice it. They will eventually follow the example, because that is how nature works.

And after a couple of decades, people will be a tiny bit more ethical and aware. Which means that those young people that you influenced, will also be different.

Maybe some of those young people will run for president or become famous businessmen. See, where I’m going?

YOU changing, will ultimately change other people too.

Our mind is a beautiful thing and the small crimes like jaywalking, littering the street and so on, influence our subconscious.

There is a point where the brain starts have a higher and higher tolerance of crime. It starts with the small thing and grows to the bigger thing.

Which brings me to the conclusion: Tolerance is the ultimate weapon for change.
