Let’s define what a KYC is,

Know-your-customer/client, also known as KYC, is the process of verifying the authenticity of the customer. This has been a standard in the investment industry ensuring investment advisors know detailed information about their clients’ risk tolerance, investment knowledge, and financial position. It protects both clients as well as investment advisors. Clients are secured by having their investment advisor know which investments are ideal for them. Knowing what they may and cannot include in their clients’ portfolios protects investment advisors. Risk management, customer acceptance policies, and transaction monitoring are common needs and regulations associated with KYC compliance.

Note: KYC rules are not required in the cryptocurrency market, albeit some have been implemented for security.

Keep in mind that the ultimate goal of KYC is to confirm that a customer is who they claim to be and to prevent illegal activities, such as money laundering, funding terrorism, and tax evasion. If a cryptocurrency exchange fails to execute KYC, it may be held accountable for such illicit acts.

How does KYC work?

KYC is handled differently by each cryptocurrency exchange. The following is a list of the types of information you may need to supply during the KYC process (depending on the crypto exchange):

  • Year of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Physical location/address

In addition, most trades require a photo of a legitimate government-issued identification card. A driver’s license, national ID, or passport can all be used. The exchange will utilize the information you supply, as well as a photo of your ID, to authenticate your identification.

In some cases, a crypto exchange may demand further verification. You may need to practice in that situation.
