If by night no day
brightened the dark
if the world weren’t
soaked in
remembrance
if the stars
and bodies
reflected the night
I wouldn’t be moved
to agreement,
in league with
the wonder of all.

If men stood by
in silence
and went silent
about their lives
and didn’t invoke
creed or philosophy
and shells wailed not
for the dimmest life
if violence were not
borne of song
I wouldn’t
be here or belong.

If passion
stirred not
the stout of mind
into rash endeavor
or sacrifice
if foolish labors
amused no man
the best to hand
and the worst
if poetry didn’t
prevail in time
I’d be last as
you are first.
