It is no secret that the healthcare industry contributes to climate change, inevitably creating a “butterfly effect”. In Australia, it’s held responsible for about 7% of total emissions, 70% of which are found embedded in the supply chain and 28% resulting from energy used to manufacture healthcare products. While GPs and hospitals try to mitigate the effects of climate change on citizens by taking immediate action when needed, a more collective preventative approach is said to potentially have both immediate and long-term effects for the sector, targeting net-zero emissions by 2040.
