Elected office was never part of the plan. I grew up in a working class family, mother from Hawaii, father a small business owner who paid my way through school working long hours so I could get a decent education. Growing up, I experienced Los Angeles as a vibrant, cultural jewel of Southern California. We’ve come so far, leading the way in the fight for civil rights, immigration and our own green new deal. But in all of this beauty and in all of this prosperity, I realized quickly that Los Angeles was no longer working for the right people.
Angelinos are being displaced, slipping into devastating poverty at the hands of corporate and special interests. More and more young people are having to work 2–3 jobs just to pay the bills and make ends meet while rents continue to skyrocket and wages stagnate. Pay to play politics have corrupted our leaders, leading to severe displacement, over 50,000 homeless on the streets and a skid row spiraling out of control. This is not who we are, this is not a Los Angeles working for the good of the people and this is not the Los Angeles I remember as a child.
I am writing you today to say enough is enough. I am running for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council to bring real, systemic change to our city.
From helping re-elect our first black president to fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community on the streets and in City Hall, I’ve never been more prepared to take on the crippling forces controlling our local government. This is why I’m running a 100% publicly funded campaign. Free from one dollar of special interest money and instead, I pledge to be beholden only to the people and build a grassroots movement that would change the politics in LA forever. So far, I am the only candidate in this race that has made this promise to you.
I’m running to lead CD14 into a new generation of leadership. For those of us searching for someone with real solutions to a system that has betrayed us; like a 20/80 ordinance and the building of new hospitals and schools. Innovative transportation systems and the investment in government subsidized affordable housing and small business loans for our suffering mom and pop’s. And to pay for all of it, all this is accompanied by the most transformative funding proposal our city has ever seen.
I’m running for the broken families sleeping on the streets and for the small business owner trying to keep their restaurant alive. I’m running for the victims of the system, and to save our cultural identity. Los Angeles is ready for new leadership. Los Angeles is Ready for change.
To make this truly a people-powered campaign, I need your help to make this a reality. There will be millions of dollars in special interest money spent trying to prevent me from getting elected, so to fight this we are asking you to participate in my POWER UP CHALLENGE!
If I can raise $20,000 in donations, the city of Los Angeles will MATCH every donation 6:1! That means that a $100 donation turns into a $600 automatically! ($20 = $120, $50 = $300, etc). If I can achieve this by the end of September, this will give me enough money to jump-start my campaign and compete in this race against the dark forces crippling our city democracy.
