Official Statement: We Stand Against Hate Toward Our Trans Community in DTLA

As a resident of DTLA, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I find it of utmost importance to speak on the injustice that occurred Friday night at Las Perlas.

As a candidate and as an individual, I stand against discrimination of any kind, including this atrocious example of transphobia exemplified by a local business. I am both deeply saddened and outraged by the transphobic behavior of the staff of Las Perlas and call for us all to do better. I understand that all aspects need to be investigated, but I stand for the fact that it is never okay to put the lives of the transgender community in harms way. Hate crimes are a very serious issue that can literally mean life or death for the LGBTQ community, and to take that lightly is an outright injustice.

After releasing their statement this weekend, instead of recognizing the fault in how the situation was handled, Las Perlas shut their doors rather than welcoming the community with open arms. If Las Perlas wants to regain support from the LGBTQ community, I call for the establishment to truly rally behind the LGBTQ community and start a movement within their venue that truly welcomes, celebrates, and benefits the Trans community.

I am personally committed to celebrating and uplifting the diversity of DTLA. This situation is not reflective of a diverse Los Angeles that welcomes everyone. It is time for us to stand together as a community and rise up to ensure that we stand as one against this type of discrimination.

I appreciate Mayor Garcetti and the LAPD thoroughly investigating this incident. I will do my part to stand with the LGBTQ community, fighting for justice to be served for our Trans brothers and sisters. #TransLivesMatter

#TransLivesMatter
