I Want To Start a Movement: Listen To the Children

A few days ago, I was reading an article that included the wishes of children, and it was pretty amazing! One child asked for everyone to have enough food; one wanted people to stop fighting; and another expressed that they wished that we would all see each other as human beings, and not categorize and rank each other according to any standard. How can children be so smart? I think these children are leading us; they are speaking from the heart, and they are carrying messages that transcend time and geography.

We have learned to discriminate, ignoring the actions and the bad decisions that have created divisional groups of “haves” and “have nots.” Like all elephants in the room, we have a tendency to choose not to see them.

During this season of the year (especially in our current environment), I think we would be happier, healthier, and more hopeful if we listened to the simple wishes of the children. Like these children, I see opportunity. I see many in our world dedicated to achieving peace, ending poverty, and obtaining religious freedom. I see an opportunity for us all to live the way that these children are asking and wishing for.

We all need a little light…a little inspiration now. So I leave you with this song, often sung at this time of year by children. I hope that you’ll sing along as you read it and listen to the wishes and wisdom of children:

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be

With God as our Father
Brothers all are we
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.

With ev’ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow
To take each moment and live
Each moment in peace eternally
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
