For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you — rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. — Romans 1:11–12

This week, I have seen a variety of serious and humorous takes on the isolation we are all experiencing. As the “person in charge” of our organization, I have remained determined to lead us all through one of the biggest battles in our history — the battle for health. And like many of you, I have not had a day off since March 13, the day we closed the day programs. I was joking last week about how many hours per week I spend in online meetings. I miss being able to see someone’s face, to gauge how they are feeling, to be able to shake hands, to hug my closest friend.

We have many advantages over those who battled the pandemic in 1918. We have better science, better communication, better technology. Yet we have bigger challenges. In 1918, there was no system of community services, no group homes, no early intervention.

I am so proud of all of you taking on this battle to keep people safe, to keep services going, to strengthen our community with your determination. It’s a scary time. Some people will get sick. Most people will recover, but a few will lose their battle. Remember that our vigilance to social distancing and health practices will keep the majority of our community safe.

As we pass through the next few week, I do wish I could see you. I hope you will know my commitment to guide us forward. I hope you will accept my appreciation for the gifts of your service to others. I want you to know how encouraged I am by your commitment to the people who count on us. And as you encourage me, I encourage you to stay in the light — it always shows us the way through.
