Climate change is disrupting weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events, unpredictable water availability, exacerbating water scarcity and contaminating water supplies. Read about the top 5 solutions for enhancing the resilience of our water resources.

  1. Utilising nature in cities: With cities being challenged by climate change extremes, a variety of leading cities around the world can implement blue-green infrastructure solutions at various scales to enhance resilience to climate change while restoring the health of ecosystems.
  2. Managing existing supplies wisely: Cities and their water utilities are utilising Information and Communication Technologies to ensure the efficient use of precious supplies, including, reducing non-revenue water in the distribution system and utilising smart meters that provide customers with real-time water consumption data.
  3. Creating climate-indepedent water sources: Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) consists of water management methods that recharge an aquifer using either surface or underground recharge techniques. The stored water is available for use in dry years when surface water supplies may be low, such as for drinking water supply or process water for industry.
  1. Future-proofing buildings: Globally, buildings are one of the highest users of freshwater resources. New buildings can install onsite wastewater treatment systems, with black water, after treatment able to be used for flushing toilets. Any excess water can be used for irrigation.
  2. Wastewater treatment plants mitigating emissions: Wastewater treatment plants can implement traditional renewable energy activities on facility-owned buildings and surrounding lands, including solar photovoltaic systems that directly convert sunlight into electricity using solar cells.

The take-out

It is up to our imagination how we can adapt to and mitigate climate change.
