Sustainable water management is vital for humanity and the planet. Effective demand management is key to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). As urbanization accelerates, addressing environmental challenges becomes essential. Advanced water management technologies, like Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), optimize water use in urban areas. Read how Denver is implementing innovative strategies to enhance its water management systems.

Urban Growth and Water Resource Strain

Over half of the world’s population resides in urban areas, significantly straining water resources. SDG 6 aims to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all, a goal vital for the sustainable development of cities and the well-being of their inhabitants.

Reducing Water Consumption and Managing Peak Demand

Demand management is essential for achieving SDG 6 in urban settings. This approach involves reducing water consumption, managing peak demand, and increasing water use efficiency. Implementing effective demand management can reduce water waste, increase the availability of water resources, and promote water conservation.

Cities can employ various strategies to achieve effective demand management:

  • Promoting Water-Efficient Practices: Encourage citizens to fix leaky taps, reduce shower times, and use efficient irrigation systems.
  • Implementing Pricing Strategies: Use tiered pricing to incentivize water conservation, with costs rising as consumption increases.
  • Managing Peak Demand: Incentivize the installation of water-efficient appliances and implement watering schedules that minimize usage during peak periods.
  • Promoting Water-Saving Landscaping: Advocate for drought-resistant plants and mulching to reduce water usage in landscaping.
  • Implementing smart water meters: Provide real-time information on water usage, allowing cities to monitor and manage peak demand and promote water conservation practices.

Benefits of Effective Demand Management

Effective demand management not only helps achieve SDG 6 but also offers additional benefits for cities:

  • Infrastructure Savings: Reduces the need for new water infrastructure, which can be costly to build and maintain.
  • Energy Conservation: Lowers energy consumption associated with water treatment and distribution, leading to cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Denver Water’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Denver Water is enhancing customer service by upgrading select meters with AMI technology. This device, attached to existing water meters, collects frequent consumption readings and transmits them to the EyeOnWater service, which is accessible via computer or mobile device. With EyeOnWater and AMI, customers can monitor daily water use, identify patterns by day, week, or month, and adjust sprinklers for efficiency.

The notification feature alerts users to unusual consumption, enabling early leak detection. Additionally, customers can track water use across multiple properties. AMI empowers users with data in the palm of their hand, promoting efficient water management. Customers with upgraded meters can download the EyeOnWater app from the App Store or Google Play to monitor their water use.

The Take-Out

Effective demand management is crucial for achieving SDG 6, ensuring clean water access in cities, promoting water conservation, and building sustainable and resilient urban areas.
