New Methods for Water Production and Harvesting

Innovations in water technology have given rise to groundbreaking methods for water production and harvesting. As traditional means of sourcing water from rivers and lakes prove increasingly insufficient, there is an urgent need for alternative sources. Cutting-edge technologies now enable the creation and harvesting of water from unconventional sources, such as air and fog.

Rise of Smart Water Systems

The water technology industry has also seen the emergence of intelligent systems that manage water resources. These systems utilize advanced analytics and machine learning to monitor water usage, detect leaks, and optimize operations. This can lead to more efficient utility operations, waste reduction, and enhanced customer satisfaction.

The Use of Digital Twins

Digital twins, virtual replicas of physical assets or systems, are a promising technology in the water sector. They allow operators to monitor and optimize operations in real time. In the water industry, digital twins are used to simulate water distribution networks and pinpoint potential problems before they arise. This technology can enhance network performance, decrease downtime, and ultimately save costs.

Decentralized Solutions for Water Management

Thames Water’s Digital Twin Technology Prevents Water Loss from Leaks

Thames Water has developed a “digital twin” of its clean water network in South London, which is helping to prevent water loss from leaks. The twin combines data from smart meters and acoustic loggers to create a virtual replica of the network in real time, which shows how the pipes are performing and serves as an early warning system for potential problems. It can also simulate the effects of different repair methods and identify the best solution. The twin has already identified a number of leaks caused by high pressures and damaged valves in Deptford, South London, where it is being trialled. Thames Water has also launched a system risk visualization tool, which combines data from different systems to provide an overall “health check” of the network, allowing the company to visualize its network performance and identify emerging risks.
