Water Management: A Global Force in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals
Water is a critical resource for life, and the effective management of water resources is essential for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). Water utilities play a crucial role in managing and providing access to water resources, and their efforts can contribute significantly to achieving the SDGs.
The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to promote sustainable development globally. The goals cover a range of social, economic, and environmental issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and climate action. The SDGs provide a framework for governments, businesses, and organisations to work together to achieve sustainable development globally.
Water Utilities and the SDGs
Water utilities play a critical role in achieving the SDGs, particularly SDG 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation. Water utilities are responsible for managing and providing access to water resources, ensuring that water is safe, affordable, and accessible. By advancing innovative water management strategies, water utilities can contribute to the achievement of multiple SDGs, including:
- SDG 1: No Poverty: Water utilities can provide affordable water services to low-income households, reducing the financial burden of water access.
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being: Water utilities can provide safe and clean water, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving public health.
- SDG 5: Gender Equality: Water utilities can promote gender equality by providing access to water services that meet the specific needs of women and girls.
- SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy: Water utilities can promote clean energy by implementing energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources in water treatment and distribution.
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities: Water utilities can promote sustainable urban development by providing water services that are reliable, resilient, and accessible to all.
SA Water: Leading the Charge in Global Sustainability Through UN Sustainable Development Goals
SA Water in South Australia is playing a vital role in global sustainability, making strides in enhancing the environment and fostering a more inclusive workforce. Committed to the SDGs, the utility has completed its first year in the UN Global Compact, aligning itself with over 12,000 global signatories. Focusing on four main goals, with Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal 6) being core, SA Water provides clean drinking water to over 1.7 million South Australians, recycles 30% of treated wastewater, and supports organizations like WaterAid to improve sanitation services globally. Further, SA Water emphasizes Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11), and Climate Action (Goal 13) through initiatives such as Aboriginal employment programs, smart irrigation, reducing plastic bottle usage, and investing in renewable energy. Acknowledging that significant contributions are a work in progress, SA Water remains committed to working with the community and industry to achieve the goals.
The Take-Out
Water utilities are key players in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, fostering a resilient and equitable future for all.
