LITTLE BIT AT A TIME

Tuesday Oct. 7, 2014

Things rarely stay exactly the same.

We might not notice day-to-day variations.

For example: hair loss

Or weight loss.

How about bad habit loss?

Would you notice that right away?

Or is it more like a slow-leaking valve in an old tire?

Change, tiny bits, probably has more chance of success than big blasting immediate dramatic change.

Easy analogy – easier to lose weight at rate of one pound a week. That’s 52 pounds a year (in less than 4 years, I’d be gone!) . Less daunting, a pound a week. I’m coming up on a year having lost only 20. I wonder, if I started with a different approach, would I be different by now? Different weight, different fitness level, different mindset …

Changing anything old-habit is difficult. Seems to me, there is little difference whether that habit, or lack of one, falls on good-for-us or not so good for us side of the ledger.

Some change our waist line.

Some can change our lives.

All about mindset, is it not?

My mind is set – not in concrete, but hardened by life, experience and habit. I don’t need a jackhammer but I can’t wait for tiny water drops to bore a hole …

Need to change it, change it up, fire it up.

Not through drama, not through upheaval but with little changes.

I made one this morning.

Small.

Nobody will notice.

Nobody will know, except me.

I will see results. I will see change.

Others might see that change too.

Not today, not tomorrow – but in time.

My life got better this morning because of one little change.

One incremental change.

P.S.: to those who called or wrote about my speaking gig yesterday – thank so much. It went well. Doing a 1-hour keynote is daunting so I’ll admit to damp armpits and the credit many years of help from Toastmaster colleagues and coaches – their help helped. Good audience reaction, positive feedback in the corridors afterward. And it was a great-escape place. I was speaking, about public speaking, to the Canadian Society of Club Managers at their convention in Banff.

morning walk: 5C/41F, calm, some skimpy clouds – Gusta back from the kennel re-acquainting herself with sights and sound of Millrise in the morning. Traffic light. Sky clear … which should bode well for tomorrow’s lunar eclipse.
