International Women’s Day 2019 — Balance for Better
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year and it commemorates the movement for women’s rights. It is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements, from political to social and cultural to economic, while calling for gender equality.
This movement dates back to the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on 8th March. It is not affiliated with any one group, but is designed to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.
It is an important time to come together to acknowledge the achievements already made, as well as to highlight the work still to be done to create a better world for equality.
The theme for IWD 2019 is “Think equal, build smart and innovate for change”. It focuses on ways in which we can progress gender equality and the empowerment of women. IWD is an opportunity to recognise goal 5 of the 2030 Agenda — ‘Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls’. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a fair and stable world.
It’s great to see how far we have come, how well people, companies and movements have promoted and made such positive changes. I hope this IWD really can encourage everyone to get involved, whether it is attending a seminar, presentation or simply reading about the subject and think about the role they can play, regardless of gender.
