Chinese firms are now aware of political risks they have to confront, particularly terrorism and political violence.

An increasing number of Chinese firms, who have made investments and started operations in overseas countries, are now aware of political risks they have to confront, particularly terrorism and political violence. To address these issues and help Chinese clients to manage their exposure to uncertainties, Markel China co-organized a series of symposiums in Shanghai and Beijing in August 2019, jointly with Aon COFCO (Aon’s China JV) and Lloyd’s China. This event was highly praised in the context of China’s ongoing and much publicized Belt and Road Initiatives.

Ed Winter, Markel International’s global head of War and Terrorism, delivered a speech on Political Violence and Terrorism, a Global Threat.

Two other presentations were given on Guidance to Geopolitical Risks — Proposal and Cases Studies by Mr. Eric Han, National Leader of Crisis Management of Aon COFCO, and Preventing and Managing Overseas Security Risks by Mr. Liu Penghui, Founder and CEO of DZ Security Consultants.

Each session was well attended by around 50 participants from local Chinese insurance companies, brokers as well as some other syndicate underwriters from the Lloyd’s China platform. The symposiums also attracted risk managers, lawyers, bankers and security consultants to attend and join the discussions.
