Ontario Utility plans Canada’s first Small Modular Nuclear Reactor

The Canada Infrastructure Bank gave Ontario Power Generation (OPG) $970 million to build Canada’s first small modular reactor (SMR).

An SMR is a smaller nuclear reactor they can build in a factory. OPG plans to install a GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 small modular reactor at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Clarington, Ontario, CBC reports. The Darlington New Nuclear Project could generate 300 megawatts of carbon-free electricity to Ontario’s grid by 2030, OPG claims.
