How to Get Started in Marketing

Don’t worry, I won’t tell you expensive ways to get started in Marketing (i.e. get a business degree, buy a lot of tools, etc.)

Here are 5 practical ways to get started in Marketing:

  1. Read books on Marketing. No, you don’t have to go and purchase hundreds of books. You can read Kindle books for free or very cheap (on Kindle or on a smart device or even your laptop!). In fact, in honor of Amazon Prime Day, I’ll even tell you that if you’re reading this on October 13, 2020, you may get a discount on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. This gives you access for free Kindle books at a monthly price (not every Kindle book, but many books are free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers: https://www.amazon.com/primeday)
  2. Get an internship at a Marketing agency. If your degree isn’t in Marketing, it may be harder to do this, but even write some companies that you’re willing to do work for free for them, and they may help you by giving you experience.
  3. Start a Marketing agency. No, don’t think that starting a Marketing agency is going to give you Marketing skills, but you can technically find outsourcing partners. If you’re good at Sales but not good at Marketing, this could be the route for you, as you’ll get your white label partners’ case studies. As you see what your outsourcing partners do, and learn more Marketing on the side, you could potentially take over operations (or hire it out to your own team eventually).
  4. Learn a lot on Udemy. Udemy has a lot of courses on almost anything, especially in the digital world. Marketing is absolutely no exception, either. You can learn a lot, and many times their courses are on sale for under $15 each. Some courses are smaller, while others are larger. On a similar idea, Hubspot also has free certification courses.
  5. Lastly (but certainly not least), the most important tip I could give is to just get started. It’s going to take a while to get excellent at Marketing, so the biggest thing you can do is to just start. If you have a company, start experimenting. If you don’t, pretend that you do and make some practice Marketing campaigns to excel at Marketing. You could also help some people for free as a freelancer (or with your own Marketing agency), but be sure to let them know that this is for you to get better at Marketing, so it’s a win-win for you both.
