How to Target Your Right Audience

Are you looking to grow your business? A clear and defined audience is the biggest thing you’ll need. If you speak generically, you’ll attract no one to your business, but if you speak to one person (and align your Marketing to that one person), you’ll get people like that one person to be a client. In Marketing, this is called a Buyer Persona, where you identify your target audience and make it clear who that person is. If you type in “create a buyer persona” in Google, you can find specific templates (or even online tools) to help you create this. It’s usually a one-page document that you can print out and have handy to look at.

Perhaps you’re wondering how to decide who your business is targeting. If you don’t know already, you can start with the easiest, assuming you have a Facebook page. Here’s how to find your business’ target market from Facebook:

  1. Visit https://business.facebook.com
  2. Enter into your Facebook page from there.
  3. Go to the top of your page and click “Insights.”
  4. Go to the left of the screen and click on “People” near the bottom of the list.
  5. You’ll see some demographics of the people who like your page (gender, age, city/country, etc.)
  6. If you have some of your Facebook friends who like it as well, keep in mind this is an average of all people who like your page (so this may not well represent your target market).

Once you have an idea of the demographics of your target market, start filling out the Buyer Persona for your business. Put in the most common demographics (the age range that had the most, etc.) so that you know which ones are the most likely for you to target. You may have to make up some interests and other parts of the Buyer Persona template.

Fill out the Buyer Persona, save it, and, if possible, print it out. This is the person you should be targeting your social media posts to, as well as who your ads should target. Facebook lets you choose on ads who you want to target in your ads, so be sure that you use this Buyer Persona while you create and post your Facebook ads (and social media posts).
