I spent the last 36 hours in Los Angeles at a Latinx conference surrounded by content creators. At first, I was hesitant to attend or better yet, to have my company sponsor the conference. To be honest, my initial thoughts were; do I really want to be surrounded by a bunch of “influencers” and egotistical folks for 3 days? Definitely not my cup of tea!

Needless to say, not only did I survive the conference, but I left feeling inspired and with so much more respect for what these content creators are doing out there. Not only for their own personal brands but also for those brands they manage to create content marketing for. It was quite refreshing and fascinating!

Fast forward to my red eye flight back to New York City (I know… don’t get me started!,) I came across this article on Forbes titled: 4 Fundamental Content Marketing Lessons You can learn from a Young YouTube Superstar, which immediately caught my attention given I was just returning from this conference.

Two things I learnt about this article: The first one; that I could have probably skipped the conference all together and just read the article (just kidding, but close enough!) and the second; that uniqueness, transparency , professionalism and credibility are all musts elements to keep in mind when creating successful content marketing.

This Forbes article does a great job at highlighting Graham Stephan, a successful 26 year old real estate and Investor YouTuber. According to Forbes, Graham’s content is compelling and successful because…

It is unique — Authenticity is a must in this day and age. Audiences can call the B.S. from miles away!

It is transparent — Being relatable is so important when connecting with any audience.

It is professional — High quality finished content is key. It doesn’t matter if it’s made for 10 people or 1 million people. It should always be created with the mindset that it will reach the masses.

It is credible — Factual statements are key; but also being able to sustain those statements makes the content believable.

All and all, content marketing is fundamental to the success and growth strategy of any business; however, companies need to understand the correct approach to content marketing. It has to be valuable, relevant and consistent to successfully serve consumer needs.
