As a YouTuber and IGer, I have lived in the digital world for several years. Being a marketing freelance also allowed me to manage social media accounts on different platforms.

Now I often share my linf in New York on Instagram. My goal this year to turn my account into a small personal brand!

Today, I want to share 5 critical learnings for those who want to build their brand on social media, especially on Instagram, and even start their business there!

#1 Understanding your value and audience first

Some people say you should “post consistently” because Instagram will promote your accounts to more people.

Indeed, having a regular posting schedule can help you to show up on Explore page. However, posting lots of content doesn’t mean your audience will like the account.

Instagram’s algorithm also uses machine learning to study each person’s preference and customize the content they see. In other words, if they never like or comment on your post, they may never see your posts anymore.

Therefore, figuring your brand value and who are looking for this value is so crucial in the beginning.

#2 Video is the trend

Starting from TikTok, you can see Instagram, Facebook, and even Spotify will launch the session to display video content. 91% of Instagram users report they watch videos weekly.

Video is now the primary format in the digital world, so you should learn how to do video editing and filming. Don’t be afraid of it!

#3 Using new features to obtain more traffic!

A study shows that while scrolling through the Reels page, content using trending audio reached an average of 4 million more views than those using other audio.

Now Instagram is testing different new features every day, and there are 2~3 features on average launched on Instagram. I will say using new features just like following recent trends on social media, and that’s why we can get more traffic in this way. Something you can start now is…

1. Using trending audio to make the video
2. Using in-app templates to make the video
3. Apply an in-app filter to your video

#4 Engagement

To be honest, likes to have already lost their importance. Comment, share, and save are the indicator now. The reason is apparent if people are willing to take further action to display their love or interest, they are more likely to show their support in the future by spending money.

According to the latest Instagram stats, posts typically get an average engagement rate of 0.98%. So we can use this as a benchmark to see if our content engages with audiences!

#5 Good content first, display ads second

Ads on Instagram reach 96.6% of Instagram’s active user base every month. That’s almost 2 billion potential customers, and the target group is still growing.

It sounds attractive, and as a marketing freelance, running the ads is the thing we always talk about.

However, the goal of running ads is to promote the content, not create the content! Therefore, make sure your content is attractive enough for your target audiences. We want to spend the money in the right place.

There are lots of successful stories about someone making money from social media. But it is not as easy as imagined, and we can tell the market now is competitive. I hope these 5 tips can help to start your dream!
