The war in Ukraine is serious and has drawn people’s attention all over the world. The war which was caused by political reasons and countries’ tensions totally changed Ukrainians’ lives, making them suffer from safety issues, lost of home, food scarcity, hygiene issues and so on. Many companies and organizations donate money or provide items needed for Ukrainian people. At the same time, a lot of companies have shut down stores and pulled out of Russia. These include companies in fast food & drink, retail (like L’Oreal, Estee Launder, H&M), technology, oil & gas, entertainment and so on.

While searching for our competitor brand L’Occitane and its actions during Ukraine war, I found out some news.

When I first looked at the official website of L’occitane at Ukraine, I found that the website worked as normal and there was no significant difference or notice about store shut-down or suspended online sales. Its website seemed almost the same as L’Occitane U.S website, with some new products and designs. Even if I didn’t know about Ukrainian, I could still recognize the pictures and product categories to identify the similarity.

After searching for L’Occitane website at Ukraine, I tried to find out information about its local stores at Ukraine. I didn’t find out specific articles about its actions towards local stores. However, I saw the store information with Google map location. It seems that the three L’Occitane stores at Ukraine are still open with address and opening hours. By the way, I’m not quite sure because during war time, I personally don’t believe that shopping malls and cosmetics stores open as usual.

Besides, I noticed a pdf called “L’Occitane Ukraine Collection”. It contains a list of items needed for Ukrainian refugees. L’Occitane calls for action and collect the items to deliver to these people. Items include hygiene products, food, power generators, thermal blankets, sleeping bags, dressings and so on. I’m not sure if all those items have been successfully delivered to Ukrainians, but I hope so.

Furthermore, I found out that the L’Occitane Group, which consists of 6 beauty brands (L’Occitane en Provence, Melvita, Erborian, Elemis and so on), work with UNICEF, a charity organization, to support children and families in Ukraine. UNICEF has announced an urgent appeal, saying that 7.5 million children in Ukraine are in danger and need “your”support. This aims to appeal people all over the world to donate and help.

Humanitarian support is needed urgently.

Heavy weapons fire has damaged water infrastructure, living environment, and children’s education facilities. The website also tells a story of a 9-year old children Masha, who grows up listening to the sound of gunfire and influenced by violence and displacement. Children’s lives, their dreams and future, are impacted badly because of war.

UNICEF also clarifies specific actions to support children and families in Ukraine. These include safe water, healthcare and hygiene supplies, psychosocial care to children, the “Blue Dots” safe spaces, and support in repairing damaged school structures.

What I see in UNICEF’s statements and its call on humanitarianism is touched and it makes me contemplate about the effects of war. People especially children are innocent and should not destroyed by a war. Their lives and future should be promising and colorful as we are.

Sad about a beginning of war.

Hope peace and love.
