Another scandal? Obviously it’s about Kim Kardashian West…
Hello and Happy Halloween guys. Halloween is a spooky and scary festival. Speaking of halloween it definitely reminds me of the Kardashians..
Which is why today I will be blogging about how people are calling out on Kim Kardashian West for releasing a shapewear line called “Kimono” and for using only slim models to promote it.
No doubt that KKW(Kim Kardashian West) has built an empire with her KKW Beauty line of makeup and now she is also extending her arms into the clothing market with her new shapewear. KKW uncovered her new Kimono Solutionwear collection Twitter, composing that it’s her “take on shapewear and solutions for ladies that actually work.” The shapewear comes in sizes XXS to 4X and is available in nine shades. KKW also tweeted that she’s had trouble finding shapewear that matches her skintone and would frequently cut hers up to create her own styles.
Although a few people expressed their excitement about KKW’s new line but many had concerns about it as well.
The other concern people had was the name of the brand “kimono”. A kimono is a traditional Japanese garment with a rich culture history, which dates back to 1615. Kim changed the name of the up and coming line from “Kimono” after receiving backlash for cultural appropriation.
HOW KIM RESPONDED TO THE BACKLASH
Quoting Kim “I am always listening, learning and growing — I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me,” she writes. “When I announced the name of my shapewear line, I did so with the best intentions in mind.”
In August 2019, Kardashian revealed that she changed the name from “kimono” to “skims” which launched on Sept. 10 2019.
MY OPINION AND HOW THE SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED
So, I definitely think that she is justifying herself pretty well because she did not mean to offend anyone in any cultural or any other way but I also think that she could’ve thought of a better name and avoided the situation as a whole because it’s known worldwide that a kimono is a traditional dress that is used for weddings and auspicious occasions. Also, if she is promoting all sizes she definitely needs to proof that with pictures especially if it’s social media because people believe what they see and if it offends them in any way and if a brand is not being able to prove a point well enough, it doesn't take any time for the world to pounce on the issue.
In a digital world according to me the PR crisis management department must be responsible to react quickly and efficiently to such issues. All businesses at some point face some sort of backlash or crisis and the way you respond to the crisis either gives the brand the much- needed image boost or significantly damages the brand even further which decides whether your customers or even business partners are still with you or not. Especially in this day and age where news goes viral in matter of seconds brands must be a 100% ready to manage and respond for any kind of backlash.
Hope you had fun reading this as much as I did writing it. xx
