Are Dating Apps Really Useful?

Since moving to NYC, I have heard people around me use dating apps. Suddenly, it becomes a trend to meet new friends and find partners. One of my girlfriends has been seeing more than 20 young men within a month in the city, which is unbelievable.

(Thanks to my lovely husband, I do not have to use dating apps. )

However, I did little research on these applications to join my girlfriends’ conversations. One of these applications has an eye-catching name: Coffee Meets Bagel.

COFFEE and BAGELS are both my favorite breakfasts. I can not resist seeing what is precisely behind the name.

Consistent General Design (Rating: 4/5)

As soon as I Google the app, the official website displays its download QR code for both Apple Store and Google Play. Besides, the image of a lady and a gentleman shows the primary mission: discovering meaning in dating and finding a serious relationship.

After downloading the app, it is super easy to use compared to another dating app, Hinge. Both mobile and website designs are light blue, representing loyalty and sharing the same message with users.

Website design and app design are just so-so. There are no surprising points in the design.

Both images and messages are shown on the application and website perfectly and demonstrate the app’s purpose.

Coffee Meets Bagel Website

Unlike other brands, the official website only focuses on promoting and leading people to use the app. There are several past-matched couples at the bottom of the website, though I wonder if they are AI photos. Moreover, there are dating tip blogs within the website to educate visitors. These are excellent contents for the online dating community to inspire and be creative! There is no actual function for matching people with the website. All designed parts should only be used within the mobile application.Let the DATING Begin! (Rating: 3.5/5)

It is required to share profile photos to the public. After editing personal information, let the matching journey begin.

Use the DISCOVER tab on the bottom to see others’ photos. I was swiping left and right to see more pictures and their information. (After scrolling down ten male profiles, I was so surprised that they were both graduated from IVY and working in finance. I felt that I was not good enough to join this app.)

However, it is so confusing to find people. “Suggested,” “Likes You,” and “Discover” can all track people’s portfolios. Which one is the best?

After a successful match, people can chat with each other to understand more.

Based on my experience, it is easy to use and start chatting. It is a great tool to know new people. However, it is far from a serious relationship.

Business Objectives with Bagels (Rating: 4/5)

Dating apps use views, traffic, subscriptions, and advertisements to make money. The first step will constantly generate enough user population and use websites and applications to prompt people to use the applications. As of December 2022, Coffee Meets Bagel has more than 300k views within one month.

Through the subscription model, the company can easily earn money through expensive subscriptions. The conversion rate

It is cute when the company calls users bagels on the website and application, which reminds people of the App’s name.

BTW, New Yorkers love bagels. People on the west coast only eat a little bagel. To write this blog, I forced my husband to download it. He found fewer users in California (he lives in LA).

It is interesting to relate bagels and dating. The name of the application has already determined the target market.

Help Center (Rating: 2/5)

Both HELP options on the application, and the website leads to Q&A articles written by employees. Although reports are helpful, it is hard for people to read solution articles thoroughly.

Based on personal experiences, by evaluating the pros and cons, the UX of Coffee Meets Bagels is rated at 3.5/5. Its website has an excellent leading and educating function. However, its mobile application needs instructions.
Based on my girlfriends’ feedback, the application helps find casual meetups. It is almost impossible to find serious relationships which are not aligned with the brand message.
