It gradually becomes the fact that TikTok knows me better than myself. It not only knows what kind of content I like to watch, but more surprisingly, it can predict what types of videos could be my next addiction, so I will never get bored and leave the app. Each time I say to myself, I have to stop scrolling up my finger, while I couldn’t control it as if my brain and my body had separated. So here comes the question, what makes TikTok become the 21-century electronic drug?

An algorithm, also known as the key component of artificial intelligence, is the main ingredient.

An algorithm is a set of instructions — a preset, rigid, coded recipe that gets executed when it encounters a trigger. While artificial intelligence, aka AI, is a constellation of multiple algorithms and other technologies working together to enable machines to sense, comprehend, act, and learn with human-like levels of intelligence. According to TikTok, the system recommends content using the algorithm to rank videos based on a combination of factors — starting from interests you express as a new user and adjusting for things you indicate you’re not interested in, too.
