What Google’s November 2023 Core Update means for you and your online business

Before I took a Digital Marketing course, whenever I heard the term “SEO,” I thought of the National Car Rental commercial:

“You are a Business Pro. Monarch of Marketing Analysis. With the ability to improve ROI through SEO all by COB. And you rent from National. Because only National lets you choose any car in the aisle and go. Good Choice Business Pro. Good Choice.

As I learned more about SEO, I got more serious about understanding its significance. On November 2nd, 2023, Google released its November 2023 Core Update. This is what that means for you…

Core Updates

A core update is an analytical tool that Google uses to predict how many people finish an entire apple while surfing the web. Google then takes the analysis and sends it to the department of agriculture so they can measure how much to invest in apple orchards — Just kidding. Google is on a never-ending mission to refine search. They launch core updates each month that take about 2 weeks and are designed to improve the “relevance” and “quality” of search results. Core Updates are an extremely significant part of search engine optimization. In a core update, the search algorithm is substantially adjusted so that the overall search experience and quality of search results are enhanced.

Previous Core Updates

Each update has specific enhancements. For example:

March

  • Enhance search relevance and quality

August

  • Improve on the changes made in March
  • Refresh ranking release history page

October

  • Further refine content relevance in search results
  • Combat cloaking, hacked content, auto-generated material, and scraped content in numerous languages

If you have an online website for your business

Google algorithm updates can significantly affect your website’s online visibility and ranking in search results. They modify how it evaluates and ranks websites which means that to remain competitive, SEO professionals and website owners should always be alert. Technically speaking, if you have an online website and you wish to keep ranking on the SERP pages you will stay updated, keep an eye on metrics, keep quality content at the center of attention, and optimize technical issues.

Things to avoid

Experts in the tech world describe this time around an update as volatile, because a websites rankings or traffic could be associated with an adjustment in the algorithm. During this period, it is best practice to avoid service or remodeling to your website as a knee jerk reaction. Again, focus on content.

Rehashing Google’s never ending mission

Core algorithm upgrades do not surface right away. Google’s crawlers can take days or weeks to “index” and review the web. Updates are designed to call to action your awareness of a website’s organic search traffic and keyword ranks. Being close to these metrics allows you to uncover weaknesses. If your business has a website, components like speed, and mobile friendliness are also tied to overall score. Do a meticulous look through of underperforming pages and what led people to those pages. Utilize Google’s help page and study areas where your content falls short in answering inquiries so that you can get on the same page with what searchers are looking for.
