The mystery of “FYP” on TikTok

Can we all agree TikTok is addicting? At least for me, the answer is YES! I will always open the app and scroll on my FYP for a while before I go to bed every night. It almost became a habit of mine and for some of my friends too. I would barely go to the search bar to find what type of short video I want to watch because my FYP already picked it for me. And their selections are always on point! It almost feels like the app can read my mind. The more I scroll on my FYP, the more accurate my results for the video category are. For someone who doesn’t know what is a FYP, I’m telling you it is probably for the best. You might not able to live without it like me, and sometimes FYP could make the time goes faster which is probably not a good thing if you value time management…

The For You page, aka “FYP”, is the first page you land on when you open the TikTok app. There are curated videos from creators you might not follow, but TikTok’s AI algorithm generates your preference based on your interests and past interactions.

The TikTok “FYP” AI algorithm uses your viewing time and behavior on the app (such as engagement) to recommend videos to users they are most likely to enjoy watching. By recording and understanding interactions with these recommended videos, the TikTok AI algorithm further refines the recommendations it provides you.

TikTok further explains that the recommendation algorithm for the “For You Page” is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to:

  1. User interactions, such as videos you like or share, accounts you follow, comments you post, and content you create.
  2. Video information, which may include details such as subtitles, sound, and hashtags.
  3. Device and account settings, such as your language preference, country setting, and device type. These factors are included to ensure that the system is optimized for performance, but relative to other data points we measure, they are underweighted in the recommender system because users do not actively express these as preferences.

In another word, the AI algorithm is trying to “read our minds” by learning our behavior patterns so it can generate the right video for us to keep scrolling. Some research said the data collection at TikTok goes much further than other social platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, and that is why they can always target the right audience.

However, this stylistic difference has allowed TikTok creators to develop a connection with their audiences that is hard to match anywhere else. It also makes TikTok a very noisy platform, but a potential gold mine for creators who can strike the perfect balance between authenticity and marketing. For marketers like us, Tiktok is truly a great place to advertise a product. The AI algorithm automatically selected our target audience for the product and the rest we could do is to analyze the data results and further improve our marketing strategy. The app includes different strategies like influencer marketing, TikTok ads, and creating organic viral content. TikTok marketing can also help businesses increase brand awareness.
