We live in an age where in a sense we are all digital marketers of some sort. Whether it be marketing your career through LinkedIn, posting a story of your favorite restaurant, or showing off your favorite pair of shoes. Those are all forms of digitally marketing things important to us, whether it is intentional or not.

So why is it that I felt like such a dummy when trying to create a captivating marketing campaign for the first time? After taking an amazing digital marketing course through my graduate program at NYU, there are five factors I wish I would’ve known when I first started out in my career. So my fellow dummies, get ready to take your skills as a marketer to a whole new level.

Storytelling Matters

When creating a digital marketing campaign you should figure out what message you are trying to get across. The goal is to create an emotional connection with your target audience. There are plenty of products and services trying to capture our attention everyday; so your content should be relatable, useful, and memorable. I once read that humans now have attention spans lesser than goldfish, which is why it is important to create compelling stories that capture attention and engage consumers on a deeper level. Establishing narratives that highlight your brand’s value, mission, and impact, will allow you to foster trust and loyalty among their audience. Storytelling can also help you simplify complex messages, making them more trustworthy and enjoyable. Overall this will help differentiate your brand from its competitors.

Finding The Right Platforms

I used to think the more platforms a marketer utilized, the more impactful their campaigns would be. This is not necessarily the case, it is more important to focus 1–3 platforms that will help your content reach your target audience in a effective way. Certain platforms are used more by specific demographics and each has unique sets of user behaviors. For example Instagram and TikTok are better for strong visual content, while LinkedIn is better suited for B2B marketing. Knowing which platforms work for you will help you tailor your content and strategy to your audience. Allowing you to keep a consistent brand presence where it matters most.

What You Need To Know About SEO

Even with the boom of generative AI, Search Engine Optimization, or SEO very important for digital marketing. It enhances a website’s visibility on search engines, driving organic traffic and increasing the likelihood of gaining new customers. A well-executed SEO strategy can offer long-term benefits, creating a flow of traffic without relying solely on paid advertising. SEO is a key component for gaining a competitive edge and long-term success in the digital market.

Data Driven Decisions

Nowadays data analytics is king. Properly using data enables you to optimize strategies, enhance content creation, and make informed decisions on where to focus resources. More personalized and targeted campaigns can be achieved through data-driven insights helping you understand customer behavior, preferences, and trends. Website traffic, conversion rates, and customer engagement, are all metrics that help you identify what works and what doesn’t. Using data analytics to enhance your marketing campaign is like going into your final exam with the notes for the whole class. Data-driven insights is the cheat code to a successful campaign.

Optimizing UX

Your user Experience (UX) directly impacts how users interact with your brand’s online presence. You want to make your UX seamless and enjoyable which will lead to higher engagement, longer site visits, and increased conversions. You can improve customer satisfaction, gaining loyalty and encouraging customers to revisit your site. Another aspect that most people don’t think about is that a good UX enhances accessibility and inclusivity, broadening your potential audience. Nobody wan’t a sports care that looks nice, but doesn’t perform because the engine sucks. Keep it clean, easy to navigate, and be consistent throughout your site.

From Digital Marketing Dummies To Brainiacs

At the end of the day we were never really dummies just uninformed brainiacs. Becoming a great digital marketer takes experience and knowledge learned overtime. Implementing the factors that I spoke about will help you advance your career as a digital marketer. I am looking forward to seeing the amazing campaigns that wonderful brain of yours comes up with in the future!
