When you see the yellow and blue colours, maybe the first thing you think of is IKEA. Yes, that’s right. As a household name furniture brand in the world, IKEA is the first choice of most international students. It is famous not only for its simple furniture style, Swedish meatballs in IKEA restaurants but also for the smooth digital experience it can provide customers.

Design Purpose

Ikea’s digital platform is mainly used to provide product information and facilitate e-commerce transactions, while also providing inspiration for home decor. Users can browse products, check if they are in stock and make a purchase. Users can click on the IKEA desktop website to immediately see some of IKEA’s recent activities and then see some of the recent discounts. The product search bar is displayed at the top right of the website so that IKEA users can accurately and quickly find the products they want. The mobile version of the IKEA platform is completely different, in the mobile version at the bottom of the list shows the five main parts, more concise and easy to search and access.Ikea’s desktop and mobile app convey its brand concept to consumers, which is both simple creative and practical. The single-colour design and the high-definition pictures of the real scene layout convey the decoration inspiration to IKEA users. It is not only a furniture store, but also the inspiration to improve the happiness index of life. Compared to the desktop, the mobile experience is more compact while keeping the brand message consistent across platforms, but also concise and functional.

User Usage

Both the desktop and mobile devices of IKEA provide users with my favourite list, which greatly facilitates users. The desktop takes users’ needs into consideration leisurely, provides product filters, and simplifies users’ shopping experience. The mobile devices of IKEA seem to be more advanced than the web version, it integrates the search function of the camera, which is greatly convenient for users to choose their favourite products in their own space.The website and mobile devices of the Ikea navigation bar are user-friendly, making it easy to direct users to different product categories or additional resources, efficient search functions, and filters help narrow down the selection and make the shopping journey smooth and straightforward.

Unique design

Whether it is the desktop or the mobile devices, the IKEA platform design reflects its product’s simple and practical design, spacious white space, and clean lines, reflect this aesthetic. The consistent use of brand colours and fonts further solidifies the brand’s visibility. The mobile devices also have a unique app theme, which can adjust light or dark, greatly considering the user’s environment when browsing the product.Both versions demonstrate IKEA’s commitment to responsive design, ensuring a seamless shopping experience regardless of device size or type. While tailored for smaller screens, the mobile app also focuses on basic functions, making the entire shopping process much simpler.

The difference between the two platforms

Compared to mobile devices, the IKEA website platform provides users with product descriptions, assembly instructions and user reviews, and the content is comprehensive and valuable to users. And mobile devices offer small, impactful content without overwhelming them.The checkout process on both platforms is clear, but the desktop has step-by-step prompts to guide users through their purchases. However, mobile devices simplify the conversion process and add a mobile wallet option.Ikea’s augmented reality (AR) capabilities, especially on mobile devices, their AR tools allow users to visualize the furniture in their home, and this integration enhances the user experience.Ikea’s digital platforms help drive sales online and in stores, comprehensive product information, and unique design styles, increase loyalty through the IKEA Family program, and promote sustainable and innovative design solutions.
