When you hear the words “New Coke” what do you think? Well if you’re like me then you’re 25 years old and probably think nothing! So let me fill you in; in 1985 Coca-Cola attempted to introduce a new formula to their product. They created an entire marketing plan around it and put a lot of money into the move. However, it failed dramatically, for a very simple reason; people already liked the taste of Coca-Cola.

This demonstrates why marketing is so important and why careful planning is essential. It’s not enough to plan, you need to be thoughtful and strategic about the choices you make. Marketers want to craft interactions that guide how people see and connect with their brand. By understanding the target audience and using the right tools, marketers can shape these interactions to highlight the desired message.

Here are five of the most important strategies, tactics, and things marketers think about when designing campaigns.

1. Understand Your Target Audience

Why it’s important: What’s easier, buying a present for your best friend, or someone you’ve never met? Hopefully, that answer is your best friend, and simply — it’s because you know and understand them. This is also the case in marketing, if Coca-Cola had understood their audience, they would never have changed their product. Understanding your audience helps identify pain points and lean into areas that will engage potential customers or audiences. Businesses that focus their marketing on their audience’s direct needs are 60% more likely to see increased engagement.

2. Engage Across Channels (Multi-Channel Marketing)

Why it’s important: A multi-channel approach maximizes reach and effectiveness. By meeting your audience wherever they are online, you provide multiple touchpoints, increasing engagement and conversion rates. Different channels serve different purposes, from brand awareness to direct sales. Supporting data shows that businesses using multi-channel marketing strategies saw a 24% increase in ROI. For example, if I have a fantasy football advice account, I will not reach people that only use Instagram if I am only on Tik-Tok!

3. Quality Matters!

Why it’s important: Ever hear the phrase quality over quanity? This idea is critical in marketing, especially in content marketing. 72% of marketers believe content marketing increases engagement and is critical to their strategy. Another aspect is optimizing SEO, which increases google search rankings allowing more people to see your content. Making sure the puzzle pieces fit, and you are allowing the google bots to rank your content appropriately. However, by the time you’ve finished reading this paragraph, Google may have changed their search rules 12 times, making this section potentially useless!

4. Data, Data, Data!

Why it’s important: Being able to quickly synthesize and analyze data is so important. Admittedly, I’m bias — I’m a data person. I like puzzles and I find daya to be one big puzzle that when actioned can create so many opportunities. It provides insights into campaign performance, enabling informed decisions. This allows for improvement and optimization across multiple channels, such as email, social media, and advertising. Data-driven organizations are 23 times more likely to acquire customers, six times more likely to retain them, and 19 times more likely to be profitable.

5. Be Intentional with Your Money

Why it’s important: Being intentional about where you put your money ensures efficient use of resources. Strategic spending that takes audience behaviors in account can help maximize ROI, in fact Google Ads normally have a ROI of 200% . For instance, a credit card company facing security issues should avoid platforms like Twitter, known for trust issues. However, a wrapping paper company might invest heavily in search ads during the holiday. By being intentional about where to place ads, businesses can ensure impact.

Crafting a successful digital marketing requires understanding your audience, leveraging multiple channels, prioritizing quality content, utilizing data and analytics, and being intentional with your budget. By focusing on these, you’ll maximize your reach, engagement, and ROI, ensuring your marketing efforts are as efficient and impactful as a well-choreographed dance routing. Play your notes right and watch your business flourish!
