Superbowl Ads

Hello everyone, it’s Mengning again. This week I want to share with you my favorite Superbowl ad 2021— by Cheetos.

The Superbowl ads are long been famous for its unbelievable price. Companies throw in huge amount of money to advertise their products, introduce a new line, market their unique brand stories, or just simply to raise their brand awareness.

2021, A Story that Drew Me in

Many of the Superbowl ads that involve female characters like to feature sexy bodies to get viewers’ attention. Especially during a national sports event like the Superbowl — — the statistics has shown way more male audience than female. However, for this year’s Superbowl ads, I found Cheetos did a very funny clip. It jumped right out to me among all of the other advertisements because it resonated with our everyday life.

After being away from the Superbowl for eleven years, Cheetos is now back to the largest national event to introduce its new line — — Crunchy Pop Mix. The advertisement featured on a celebrity couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, as well as Shaggy for the song part. Shaggy is best known for his song “It wasn’t me” in 2000 which is about cheating on your girlfriend. However, twenty-one years later, the earworm’s lyrics have been modified for none other than Cheetos.

For its one-minute Super Bowl ad, Cheetos is relying on not one but three celebrities to plug its Crunch Pop Mix, a combination of its signature cheese-flavored puffs and the brand’s new line of popcorn.

Is it the Content that Interests Me?

The commercial starts with Ashton Kutcher asking his girlfriend Mila “Did you steal my Cheetos again?” and Shaggy looks at Mila and says, “Just tell him it was you.” Throughout the ad, Ashton catches his girlfriend going behind his back to snack on his Crunch Pop Mix. And Mila continually tries to deny her thievery with Shaggy’s famous lyric, “It wasn’t me.”

It was funny because every time she denies stealing Ashton’s snack, she has Cheetos’s orange powder on her face and fingers. By the way, Cheetos created a new name for the orange powder last year called “cheetle”, and Mila in the scene has the “cheetle” all over her.

Shaggy sings his part about halfway through the ad with a Cheetos-themed “It Wasn’t Me” song. At the end of the commercial, Ashton gives up, believing Mila when she once again uses those three words to conceal that she steals Ashton’s snack — despite the fact that her face is covered in “cheetle”. Then Shaggy quips, “Well, that’s the first time that’s ever worked”.

A Catchy Story = Successful Marketing

The content of Cheetos ad really draws me in because I often steal my boyfriend’s snack and trying to hide it. It resonates with our daily life and the way it modified the song makes it even funnier. After watching the ad, I almost went out and bought myself a bag of Cheetos as if it was me that in the ad. I love it because it successfully gives audience a sense of substitution. The crunchy chewing sound makes me want to eat, and the orange cheese powder makes me want to lick my fingers.

Paid Social Media and More…

Cheetos did its paid search and paid social media on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Also it’s on the Superbowl commercial at the 3rd quarter.

I would always share it with my family and friends because of its funny sense and the feel of reality.

Hope my blog this week has given you some new insights on marketing! I can’t wait to see you next week:)
