After moving to New York, I spent a lot of time learning how to work remotely in different time zones. It’s so different from when I was still in Taiwan (I miss my colleague🥲).

Of course, having online meetings is my daily routine with people worldwide. Because of it, Our company started developing our meeting tool “MixerChat” last year.

You know, today, this article is related to user experience, so let me show more details about the UX part of Mixerchat — from a project member side 😉

So, what’s the difference between MixerChat & other meeting tools?

We can say, MixerChat is an online conferencing tool focusing on breakout rooms.

In MixerChat, everyone can easily create different breakout rooms on the left side of the pictures below. When you tap on a different room, you will directly enter that room and can switch between rooms easily.

Click “Create new” to create new break room
Switch form <Main Room> to <MixerChat Marketing>

For example, in my company, product creation consisted of several functions (developers, product managers, designers, marketers, and user researchers), and during project syncs, we grouped together in the main room and updated our latest statuses first.

Then, we split up to talk more thoroughly about specific topics in separate rooms — a room for developers & designers for UI/UX topics, another for PMs and user researchers to discuss product development-related subjects, and more! Lastly, we regrouped in the main room to share what we talked about & determine next steps.

What kind of problem do we want to solve?

What’s the purpose of designing this kind of breakout room?

Here is the article talking about 26 embarrassing moments in the breakout room. I can’t agree more!!!!!!

People create breakout rooms to make the conversion more diverse and let everyone share their ideas.

However, we always….

#1 Wait for the host to set up breakout rooms

#2 No idea what you should say because you are not interested in the topic of the room

#3 Have no idea how to switch to other rooms, so just be quiet and turn off your camera

Let’s the reason why we want to create a meeting tool which let all the participants create and switch the room by only one tap. No need to wait for the host or even wait for any access.

Have your meeting everywhere!

The other thing we observed is that people now work from any place. Sometimes, their laptops are out of battery, and they forget to bring their chargers, or they are not in the office, maybe still on the subway.

Therefore, MixerChat also provides mobile version! It is similar to desktop version, click different rooms and you can switch to other rooms.

Unfortunately, we’re still working on it. There are some cons we already know, like if someone shares the screen, it is too tiny for people using a mobile phone to see clearly on their screen.

White and yellow, warm and bright color

Different from Zoom or Google Meet, they mainly use blue, black, and white as their visual color, displaying more professional vibe of their product.

We choose yellow and white as the visual color for MixerChat. We know every meeting is important, but we also know everyone has countless meetings because Covid changes our working situation.

Therefore, that’s why we choose the color bringing more positive and active vibe.

MixerChat was inspired by our team’s working style, and communication is a big part of it, even in this hybrid working environment that everyone is experiencing.

I am really excited to share this product in this way, free feel to let me know if you want to give it a try for your next meeting!
