Mount Gay partnered with 4Ocean in 2021 to protect and clean the ocean by removing plastic.

Mount Gay’s distillery deed goes back to 20th February 1703 making it the oldest rum distillery in the world. It produces most of the Barbadian rum being exported globally.

4Ocean is a for-profit company that sells ocean-friendly products which fund their operation of cleaning the debris from the ocean and raising awareness about the ocean.

The Partnership

Mount Gay, a Barbadian brand that has been around for the past 300 years has a deep connection with the ocean for obvious reasons. Being surrounded by a water body that helped them emerge like a volcano into the world, Mount Gay is thankful for the ocean.

Mount Gay made in a Barbadian terroir, uses sugarcane, coral filtered water, the island breeze, and the tropical climate that ages the rum, to infuse Mount Gay with its singular taste.

Mount Gay will contribute $5 for every bottle sold and a dollar for every cocktail sold up to $100,000 towards the ocean by supporting 4Ocean’s Pound+Program to remove tons of plastic from the ocean.

The brand also aims to educate its community of bartenders, drinkers, and other team members on how they can work towards being more sustainable. Their efforts with 4Ocean include an exclusive 4Ocean red bracelet with Mount Gay’s charm that is sold by both the companies to raise awareness about the ocean and would be distributed at various Mount Gay’s events.

“Our premium rums are heavily influenced by our roots in Barbados, from the coral filtered water to the ocean air imparted in our tropical ageing process. And as we are deeply ingrained in the sailing community, the ocean is at the center of experiences our clients enjoy. Protecting the ocean, one of the essential elements that unite Mount Gay and our community, is an important part of our partnership with 4ocean.”

— Ian McLernon, President and CEO Americas at Rémy Cointreau.

It is estimated that by the end of 2022, Mount Gay would have helped 4Ocean to remove 20 million pounds of trash from the coastlines, rivers, and oceans.

Not the first for Mount Gay

This is not the first time Mount Gay has partnered to protect the ocean. In 2019, Mount Gay partnered with Oceana, the biggest organization that works exclusively for ocean conservation.

They launched the more taste, less waste, a campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastic, thereby reducing the use of plastic.

Mount Gay has been working towards protecting the environment and Barbados and aims to achieve 100% sustainable agriculture by 2025.
