Why Facebook will be boycotted?

The move started as part of a broader campaign against Facebook and Instagram initiated by the Anti-Defamation League, NAACP, and other organizations. This boycott was aimed at calling on Facebook advertisers to suspend advertising spending on Facebook in July 2020. They demanded that Facebook Minimize the appearance of bad speech on the platform. Advertisers are dissatisfied with Facebook’s misinformation, hate speech, and poor laissez-faire, even though Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a series of policy changes before the boycott began, but such changes are not very good. The improvement of bad comments continues to be posted, and there are still threats of violence and hate speech on Facebook, as well as misinformation posted by President Donald Trump and other controversial accounts and pages.

The consequences

Facebook may face resistance from more and more advertisers. Such a boycott may create a wave of negative news for Facebook, and Facebook may lose advertising profits of some major advertisers in the short term. Even if the profits cannot have a material impact on Facebook, Facebook may lose advertising revenue of small and medium-sized enterprises along with the boycott over time.

I respect facebook’s rules that allow free speech, but the problem of social inequality is huge, and inappropriate speech on the Internet will not help solve the problem, on the contrary, it will accelerate the deterioration and spread of social inequality. People are addressing these issues through speeches, marches, and protests, and large corporations are doing the same (donating things and money to support the black community, and speaking out for them on corporate websites and advertisements).

My point of view

Such boycotts make clear the brands’ determination to fix the problem, and the boycott actually benefits the company that made the announcement or pulled out of the AD. Because while they save money on advertising, they also run a wave of ads for their brand and promote the company’s good values, giving people a good impression of the company’s subconscious image. The behavior of these companies reminds me that company marketing is not only about product packaging and people’s views on products. Another way of company marketing is to help people send positive energy voices together to protest against the occurrence of incorrect things in society. Such an approach can also bring tremendous changes to society. While the company speaks for people, they also resist the occurrence of bad phenomena and urge the change of bad phenomena. I hope more and more companies in society can have such a situation for people to speak up.
