Hi, this is Mata. A biomedical engineering student and now a product marketing freelance and content creator in New York. I know it sounds a bit weird, so let me share this story with you all today!

What made me change from biomedical engineering to content creation?

I already knew my passion wasn’t biomedical engineering when applying to college. However, in Asia, people always value the major, which can bring money and reputation. At that moment, I didn’t know “what I wanted to do,” so I followed what most people do.

When I interned in hospital, I needed to operate with doctor and finally found that I am a bit afraid of blood…

In my second year in college, I realized I couldn’t work in a medical lab or hospital. It’s so dull, at least for me. When I was thinking about my next step, the first thing that came to my mind was YouTube ( in 2017, there were more and more Taiwan YouTubers obtained over 100k subscribers )

Yes, I want to become a YouTuber! I want to share my life with people and make money simultaneously! That’s how the ridiculous story started.

Fail to become YouTuber, but success to find my passion

At that moment, I started learning to film and video edit, regularly updating new videos weekly. I got subscribers, brand commercial opportunities, and life accomplishments one year later.

However, although being on the way to my career goal, I felt tired of making content and pushing myself to the public. I lost the excitement I had when I opened the camera.

“ Maybe…Was YouTuber an ideal job option? “ I asked myself. Always worry about the view numbers of videos, thinking about how to earn more subscribers, and forcing myself to make the content people like rather than enjoy. To be honest, all these things not interested me anymore. Finally, I stopped to update my channel.

During that break, I opened LinkedIn and figured out what I should do after graduation ( I definitely would not return to the hospital…). The only skills I had were video editing and social media management. After researching, I thought the only internship I could apply for was a “social media intern.” Fortunately, I got an offer from my ideal tech company PicCollage.

June 2021, I started my operation & marketing internship at PicCollage.

In a blink of an eye, I have been in this company for almost two years. In the beginning, I just managed the marketing project for a specific app, but I was lucky to have the chance to try more, market research, influencer & email marketing, campaign design, etc. In short, I become a marketing freelance and travel around and keep working with this fantastic company now 😁

Although I am still learning, I can say I am obsessed with marketing industry

Not only with social media, marketing can be more diverse. Last summer was my first time to join the product team as market researcher, I help to led user research project and developed products with cross-functional teams of designers and developers. After four months, we built the VidCollage.app from 0 to 1 with the result of 4K unique users in the first month of launch🤩🤩🤩

VidCollage is an app can let everyone to make creative video in 5 seconds

I just moved to New York, my dream city, to pursue integrated marketing master degree at NYU and still work as a marketing freelancer and update new YouTube videos. This is my story, and it’s the beginning, stay tuned!

Welcome to follow me and explore the big apple with me 🍎
