The failed introduction of a European Super League has been the best story in football this year. For years, there had been rumors that such a league was on the way.15 of Europe’s biggest football (soccer) clubs from England, Italy, and Spain have agreed to form a ‘European Super League’ (ESL) that will begin ‘as quickly as feasible.’ Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Arsenal would be among the six English teams, with three each from Italy and Spain will be participating in this league. The plan was announced on April 18, 2021, and all six English teams participating declared their withdrawal three days later. Most of the other clubs fell in line shortly after. The idea, which had been announcing a new chapter in European football, had failed in less than 72 hours. It was a public relations nightmare that will go down in history as one of the most terrible marketing blunders ever.

No communication between management and players.

Before implementing such a concept, the world’s wealthiest football clubs did not consult with fans. Worse yet, neither the players nor their managers were consulted. They’d be the ones playing in the new event. Did they really want to be a part of it?

They used the player’s faces after announcing this league and in the results, Liverpool players were scolded when they arrived at the stadium, despite having no involvement in the decision. When Liverpool captain James Milner was questioned after the game, the first signs of unhappiness among the players were visible. He made it obvious that he was unhappy with the proposals and hoped they would not be implemented.

Reaction of Fans

The media, commentators, politicians, members of the Royal family, and, most importantly, fans all over the world condemned the rebel clubs. Even people with close ties to the clubs involved were outraged. Gary Neville, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, and former club captain unleashed a barrage of criticism that seemed to resonate with fans of all clubs. While Prince William was slamming each of the rebels, as well as the ESL concept in general, the hierarchies behind the surprise statement remained loud quiet. It’s worth noting that each of the six English owners is one of the world’s most successful & richest businesspeople. They’re not folks with low IQs, but it’s worth noting that they all maintain a low media profile.

How they could avoid the social media disaster?

On their websites and social media outlets, the clubs have issued a short statement. The launch was unprofessional, especially considering the new league was expected to bring in $3.5 billion in investment. It’s all about the presentation. This is one of Apple’s key marketing lessons. When it came to unveiling new goods, Steve Jobs was known for his showmanship and presentations. It was successful. He was able to direct the story and display the product in the manner he desired. Apple ran a successful business and was in charge of his company’s narrative From the moment the ideas were disclosed, supporters of the Super League never had control of their story.

It’s all about how you see things. You’re condemned to fail if you can’t control it.
