You can say the Waze app is just another GPS navigation software that works on smartphones and tablets. But the feature that made Waze stand out from its competitors, was the ability to use user-submitted information along your route. Now you were able to see accidents up ahead, police stop points, and even those state troopers hidden in the trees. It was this feature that ultimately let the app to be acquired by Google for a very hefty sum back in 2013.

Many services and products use AI in their product development and marketing. However, Waze was able to capitalize on this technology and create a brand new product that stood out from the rest. By allowing the app to use user-generated input, it was transformed from a simple GPS navigation tool to a source of empowerment for the consumer. No longer did a motorist have to stay stuck in traffic; they were now able to find a faster way using off the beaten path suggestions from fellow motorists.

How else does Waze make use of AI? Well, how about you ask it to play a specific playlist on Spotify? Or ask it to read you the news or weather, make a phone call, read or send a text… all without taking the Waze app from your main screen. That’s right, Waze is now integrated with Google Assistant so your phone is at your fingertips by simply saying “Hey Google”.

Most recently the company decided to explore using their platform and AI for other uses for the consumer. In 2018 they partnered up with an AI firm to use their data to make roads safer. This agreement gives anonymized driver data to help cities manage traffic and infrastructure. Starting in select cities in Nevada, Florida, and California, the service is planned to expand to other cities in the coming years.

I love the feeling of beating traffic congestion at its own game. And as an added bonus I get safer and more efficient roads. I think I’m in love, Waze!
