They’re Doing What?!

When you are such a big fan and loyal customer of something or someone, it is hard to believe that they are capable of doing something so wrong. I have been addicted to checking Facebook for years now, and recently I get the news that they are abusing their own customer’s personal data!

I know it is incredibly important for brands to do research and use data to make decisions in an effort to be successful in marketing their brand. To an extent, the major companies should be using our data in order to marketing to us.

It is crazy to think that companies such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook have been using and selling our personal data for personal and financial gain. Activities such as these should definitely be put to a stop.

As mentioned in this article by CBS, The Screening House, “From our morning exercise data that we upload via our Fitbit, what we purchase on eBay during our lunch-break, to ordering dinner online in the afternoon, the ownership and use of the massive amount of personal data that an average person produces is becoming a multi-billion-pound industry.”

Today, people are all over the internet 24/7, constantly browsing, buying, and clicking. All of this information is there for big companies to use and they definitely have been, making people feel more and more uncomfortable with sharing their information and taking advantage of everything the world-wide-web has to offer.

The internet is such an amazing gift given to people all over the world, and it should be a place for people to feel safe to roam around, learn things, and buy things. This should not be a place where they feel like they are being spied on or restricted on what they are saying or reading.

One of the big companies taking part in this is Amazon and when I received an Amazon Echo as a gift I was honestly scared to start using it for this reason. People should not feel like they are being listened to and used. The internet should be what it was created to be!
