Ikea, a Swedish furniture firm, released a new app called Ikea Place in 2017. Ikea Place is a useful tool that employs augmented reality to assist customers to figure out if Ikea’s furniture will fit in their space. The app was well-received, and it quickly became the most popular free app in the app store for non-gaming uses of augmented reality.

Let’s onboard to the future.

IKEA Studio can recognize windows, doorways, and existing furniture; if the app detects any real-world objects, it will automatically place a white box over them, allowing you to concentrate on your redesign while changing wall colors, arranging new furniture, and decorating your space with a variety of IKEA products. You can even layer digital furniture on top of one another, much to how you might a lamp or a potted plant on a shelf. In a recent interview, Tim Cook expressed his excitement for augmented reality, saying that he wanted to “yell out and scream.” He mentioned IKEA and said that buying furniture is one example of something that AR can radically transform.

Future goals using AR to the next level

Moving beyond simply placing virtual chairs and lamps in a space, SPACE10 claims that IKEA’s goal is to assist users to create whole rooms using the iPhone’s LiDAR sensors. That’s correct, IKEA is still working on an Apple-only initiative. Starting in open beta, SPACE10 hopes that users will help them fine-tune Studio’s final offering, but for now, it lets you capture complete 3D room plans with measurements, including windows and doorways, and it detects your existing furniture and places white boxes on the plan where your current chairs, tables, and sofa are located. Apart from this you can then add furniture, shelving systems, and decorations, and change the color of the walls before exporting your design in both 3D and 2D and sending it to others for approval or ridicule. Ceilings can be included in the models, allowing you to add virtual suspended light fittings. Other new capabilities include the ability to interact with goods, such as turning AR lighting on and off, as well as the ability to stack items on top of one another, such as a lamp on a sideboard.

How this will benefits the brand?

IKEA Place capitalizes on futuristic design and functionality trends with cutting-edge technology to offer an immersive and dynamic user experience. This technology elevates the expression “try before you buy” by allowing consumers to examine the size, shape, appearance, and functionality of a new item without ever leaving their living room. IKEA Place uses augmented reality to provide consumers with an immersive experience that keeps them interested and encourages them to make a purchase sooner. It’s a hybrid of the digital and physical worlds, and it makes IKEA highly mobile-friendly.
