Name: Jo Burke
Tell us about what makes your town special: I’m a born and bred South East Londoner and love all the creativity, parks, pubs and people that make Greenwich so special.
What markets do you enjoy visiting in your spare time and why? My favourite has always been my local one which is, of course, Greenwich Market. In central London it’s Covent Garden and Borough Markets. For me it’s always about unique, hand crafted, quality products made with skill and love. Not something you can find in most chain stores.
What inspired you to become a market trader and tell us what you love about being a trader #downthemarket I wanted to get my children’s books that promote diversity and inclusivity to as many people as possible. Signing and selling my books at Greenwich Market with its many tourists means the books are now in schools and homes not just here in London but as far afield as, New Zealand, Australia, America, Portugal, Spain, France, Germany to but a few. I love meeting fellow book lovers and knowing that in this world of tech, books still matter and are cherished and passed down through generations. Not something you do with an iPad!
What is special about your business and your products (are they sustainable or the product of a special crafting process?) I write the books and my husband creates all the stunning watercolour illustrations. We do absolutely everything ourselves. Which is unique and means everything is exactly as we want it without any compromise. As well as writing the books I often visit schools to encourage creativity and literacy.
Are you active in your local community (do you like to #shoplocal, support independent businesses or are involved in charity work?)I prefer to shop at Greenwich Market or independent shops because you know that money spent there allows them to produce more quality unique products and carry on doing what they love. It’s a win win.
