The Day A DIY Toast Rack Humbled Me
Despite my extensive travel experiences
A couple of years ago, I saw a Facebook post where somebody showed a photo of a makeshift toast rack, although it was more of a “toast tent”, as you can see from the photo above.
I showed this post to a friend and commented that you could simply buy a toast rack and be done with it.
I was not expecting her answer, however.
She pointed out that for some people, even the cost of a basic toast rack (you can get them for under $7 on Amazon, for example) is a luxury they simply cannot afford.
I was well aware that many people are incredibly poor — my extensive travels in both Africa and Asia had made that clear.
I’ve visited the incredibly basic housing in which some people in China live. I’ve witnessed people sleeping in cardboard boxes on the pavement outside a luxury hotel in New Delhi. And I’ve been in the Maasai huts made of poles, cow dung, and grass in Kenya.
And in Morocco, our tour guide advised us not to give the children in the Berber village we were visiting any money at all, because what seemed like so little to us would make their fathers feel worthless — even a small coin or two might be more than they made in an entire week.
